Overview

This course provides an overview of the history of the marijuana/cannabis prohibition, the biology of the plant, an overview of the endocannabinoid system, risks and benefits of the plant and its constituents, dosing and administration of cannabis products, and nursing implications for safe and appropriate patient care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Question the placement of cannabis (marijuana) in Schedule I category of the Controlled Substances.
  2. Identify at least 5 phyto-cannabinoids.
  3. Explain what is meant by the entourage effect with cannabis.
  4. Describe the 3 key components of the endocannabinoid system and its overall function.
  5. Compare the risk factors of cannabis in relation to medications used for chronic pain or seizures.
  6. Identify a key patient response when suffering from cannabis hyperemesis syndrome.
  7. Explain how and why cannabis has therapeutic effects for a variety of health problems
  8. Explain at least 3 ways in which cannabis is helpful for chronic pain.
  9. State and Describe the basic principle for determining the proper dosage of a full spectrum cannabis product.
  10. Describe at least 3 ways in which a person can maintain or strengthen their ECS.

Mary Lynn Mathre MSN, RN

President

Mary Lynn (ML) Mathre is the President and Co-founder of Patients Out of Time and Past President and Founding Member of the American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA). Mary Lynn graduated from the College of St. Teresa In Winona, MN in 1975 and began her nursing career in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. She earned her MS degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1985 and her thesis was on Marijuana Disclosure to Health Care Professionals. Originally a medical surgical nurse, Ms. Mathre changed specialties in 1987 and has been a certified addictions registered nurse (CARN) since 1989. She began as the charge nurse on the Addiction Treatment Unit at the University of Virginia Health System, and later as the first Clinician 5 (expert level), she was the Addictions Consult Nurse for UVA Health System until 2002. She later was Exec. Dir. of an opioid dependence treatment center in Charlottesville
