Overview

Clinical Topics
Women's Health

This presentation provides nurses with a practical overview of basic OB/GYN care for incarcerated patients, emphasizing the unique reproductive health needs of women in correctional settings. Topics include menstrual health, contraception, pregnancy and postpartum care, menopause management, and mental health care as well as the ethical and legal considerations involved in providing care behind bars. Participants will gain tools to deliver trauma-informed, patient-centered, and culturally sensitive care while navigating common barriers to access. By the end of the session, nurses will be equipped with knowledge and strategies to advocate for and improve the reproductive health outcomes of women in custody.

Learning Objectives

  • Review fundamentals of OB/GYN care—including menstrual health, contraception, pregnancy, menopause, and pharmacology management—in the correctional setting

  • Demonstrate best practices for trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and patient-centered OB/GYN care in custody
  • Apply nursing interventions to support reproductive health, manage urgent conditions, and coordinate referrals for incarcerated patients
